Walnut End Tables in Progress |
Select stock. Layout boards for best yield |
Rip and crosscut to rough length with bandsaw and jigsaw. One board leftover on the left, scrap on the main saw table, rough cut stock in piles, according to table part, on right. |
I spent two days surfaceing the stock and gluing up panels. Note how I ensure a flat glueup with clamping cauls. |
Here are all the panels glued up and the rest of the planed stock for the aprons and legs. |

On day 4 I cut the tops to size, legs to length, laid out and cut all 24 mortises in the legs. On day 5 I cut all the apron parts to length, cut all the tennons and hand fit them. |
I cut 24 more mortises for the slats to go in the side rails. The slats are resawn from 8/4 stock. I kept them in order so the grain on each side matches. I cut arches on the upper front and lower side rails. Lower rails were mortised for shelf. Shelf was ripped to width and cut to length and large tennon was cut.
This is the final dryfit. I hope to sand and glue everything today and maybe apply a coat of finish on the tables. |
The finish is 4 coats of polymerized tung oil, rubbed out with pumice and rottenstone, followed by wax. My Stanley #7 and #3, type 13, provide some scale to the tables. |
